I definitely love to visit bookstores these days...
during a trip to Bremen, I unexpectedly detected an article about the DP award 2009 in a local book store, at Hamburg main station, while looking out for some interesting new literature to read on the train (see at left).
Later, still in the same store, my eyes came across the french issue of National Geographic, including the article about pollen (middle and right), and both corners of my mouth tried to scratch my ears.

Herbert-the-lazy-guy finally back in his 'office', doing what he does for almost 24h-a-day. The rest of the time he is either eating or 'explaining' his cheeky sister, that HE is number 1 in town (respectively at home), and she is number 2.

National Geographic: 'Love is in the air...'
...is the sweet title for Micronaut's first article, published by the National Geographic (Dec 2009).
Merely known for their allergic potential, pollen grains will probably ruin a couple of our days next spring again. Whatsoever, what most of us don't know is that they are extremely beautiful and surely range among the most fascinating living things on earth.

'German Scientific Photographer of the Year'
Micronaut is proud to announce, that he has just received the 'German Scientific Photographer of the Year' award 2009! The awarded series of images named 'The Evolution in Flowering Plants'. Composite flower heads look like big single flowers, but they are composed of numerous individual 'florets' or single flowers. "The images explain an entirely complex process at first sight", says the author. Actually, 2009 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin, who published his groundbraking 'Theory of Evolution' in 1859. Therefore Micronaut has dedicated his series of images to the ingenious english naturalist. Link: BDW Awards 2009
honestly - it's a nice compliment...
What you see here is a cat trying madly to eradicate two waterdrops displayed on different prints. I just added reflexes to the surface of a waterdrop, scanned with an SEM, then printed out both frames and placed them on the floor to decide which frame works best... attentively observed by Cleopatra, which even checked under the sheets before finally giving up fully disappointed.

the naked truth about daisies
With inimitably clear vision, Sir Charles Darwin wrote in 1859 (!): "Flowers rank amongst the most beautiful productions of nature, but this beauty serves merely as a guide to insects, in order that the flower may be visited and fertilized." The image displays eight different steps during the coloration process, using the single florescence from a composite as an example. new header on Micronaut-the blog!
What the hek is this?! Well, it was a lot of work but unfortunately the silly flower seemed not to harbour a single pollen grain at all. So I tried to get close enough to maybe find some nasty bacteria at least -to make the best out of the situation. But what resembles bacteria at first sight turns out to be the smallest pollen grains in the kingdom of plants. Indeed, those marvellous things measure only 4.5µm in length and still hoste the complete male genome safely inside. It's a miracle! © Martin Oeggerli / www.Micronaut.ch, 2009. All rights reserved.
